Is Reze Dead in Chainsaw Man?

Is Reze dead in Chainsaw Man?

This is one of the first questions many fans have after watching or reading the Bomb Girl arc. I had the same feeling, because Reze’s ending is not written like a normal defeat. It happens when she is already on her way back to Denji.

In my view, the real Reze died in that alley.

By “the real Reze,” I do not mean the Bomb Hybrid body that later appears under Makima’s control. I mean the Reze who had her own feelings, changed after spending time with Denji, and finally turned back with the flower he gave her.

Reze is a Bomb Hybrid, so her body does not follow normal human death rules. That is why her body can still appear later. But for fans who truly like Reze, the important part is not whether a controlled body can still move. The important part is whether the Reze with her own mind is still there.

For me, that Reze ended at the end of the Bomb Girl arc.

Why did Reze turn back to the café?

Reze first approached Denji with a mission.

She did not meet him by accident. She knew why she was getting close to him, and she knew what her target was. But the Bomb Girl arc does not write her as someone who only follows orders.

The time she spends with Denji at the café, at school, and at the pool slowly changes the feeling between them. Denji is awkward and honest. He does not hide his feelings well, and he does not know how to play emotional games. At first, Reze can use that. Later, her attitude no longer feels as simple as a mission.

After the fight by the sea, Denji lets her go. He also tells her to come to the café if she wants to.

That promise sounds childish, but it reaches the part of Reze that the mission never touched. She could have left Japan. She could have disappeared and left Denji behind.

Instead, she takes the small flower Denji gave her and turns back toward the café.

That action says enough. Reze may not have fully understood what she wanted, and she may not have known what her future could be. But in that moment, she wanted to see Denji again.

Reze Figure

What happened in the alley?

Reze never reaches the café.

Before she can meet Denji, Makima appears in the alley and stops her. The scene feels cold because it is not presented as a dramatic battle. Reze is already close to making her choice, and Makima cuts that choice off before it can happen.

As a Bomb Hybrid, Reze needs to pull her pin to transform and fight back. Makima does not give her a real chance. Then Angel Devil’s weapon pierces through her body.

Reze falls in the alley, and her awareness begins to fade. Before she dies, she says that she has never gone to school either.

That line matters.

Before this moment, the school scenes can look like part of Reze’s act. But her final words make those scenes hurt more. She used the image of an ordinary girl to get close to Denji, yet she also never truly had an ordinary life herself.

She is not explaining a failed mission. She is showing a small part of who she really was before the story takes her away.

At the same time, Denji is still waiting inside the café.

He does not know that Reze turned back. He does not know she is lying in the alley. To Denji, it only looks like Reze never came. To the fans, it hurts more because we know she was already on her way.

She did not break the promise. She failed to arrive.

Did Reze really die in that alley?

I think she did.

At least, the Reze with her own mind died there.

Makima stops her, Angel Devil’s weapon pierces her body, and the manga treats that moment as the end of Reze’s personal choice. The later appearance of her body does not erase what happened in the alley.

This is where the discussion becomes tricky. Reze is not a normal human. As a Hybrid, her body can still exist in a different way. Later, her body appears again under Makima’s control.

But a moving body is not the same as Reze herself being alive.

The later version does not return to Denji by choice. It does not continue the café promise. It does not show Reze speaking or acting as the person who turned back with the flower.

So the answer depends on what we mean by “alive.”

If we only talk about the body, Reze appears later. If we talk about Reze’s original personality, the one fans cared about, I believe she died in the alley.

Was the later Reze really her?

I find it hard to treat the later controlled form as the real Reze.

Her body is there, and the Bomb Hybrid power is still there. But she appears under Makima’s control, and the story does not let her continue the choice she made before reaching the café.

That is very different from the Reze before the alley.

Before that scene, Reze could still make decisions. She changed direction because of Denji. She took the flower and walked back. That action belonged to her.

The controlled version does not carry that same feeling. It looks more like Makima using Reze’s body than Reze herself returning.

This difference is important. Fans do not remember Reze only because of her appearance or her ability. They remember her because she had a moment where she seemed ready to step outside the mission.

Denji waiting at the café makes it worse

Denji waits for Reze at the café.

He does not know what happened in the alley. He does not know that she changed her route.

For Denji, the result is simple. Reze did not come.

For fans, the scene hurts because we know more than he does. Reze did not throw away the flower and leave. She was already walking back to him. Makima stopped her before she could finish that final stretch.

If Reze had never turned back, the ending would not feel the same. It hurts because she did turn back.

Denji never learns what she chose at the end. Reze never reaches him to explain it. The most important step between them stops in the alley.

Why I see the real Reze as dead

The most important part of Reze is not her Bomb Hybrid power.

What makes her memorable is that final turn back to the café. She could have left, but she chose to see Denji again. That choice makes her feel like a person instead of only a weapon in someone else’s plan.

Makima cuts off that choice before it can reach Denji.

When Reze’s controlled body appears later, the story does not continue that choice. It does not let her face Denji again as herself. It does not give her a chance to say what she was going to do that day.

That is why I see the real Reze as dead.

Not because her body can never move again, but because the Reze with her own feelings and decision never truly returns to the story.

Can the real Reze come back later?

That depends on how the story develops.

If Reze’s body appears again without her own mind, I would not call that a real return. For fans to accept her as truly back, she would need to regain her own awareness and face Denji by her own choice.

Until that happens, the alley remains her clearest ending.

The Reze who took the flower and tried to meet Denji is still left there.

FAQ

Is Reze dead in Chainsaw Man?

If we are talking about Reze’s original personality, I believe she died in the alley at the end of the Bomb Girl arc. Her body appears later, but it is under Makima’s control.

Did Reze really die in the alley?

Yes, the alley scene can be read as the death of the real Reze. She is stopped by Makima, pierced by Angel Devil’s weapon, and never reaches Denji at the café.

Is the later Reze still the real Reze?

I do not see the later controlled form as the real Reze. It is her body being used under Makima’s control, not Reze returning with her own will.

Why did Reze not meet Denji?

Reze was already walking back to the café with the flower Denji gave her, but Makima and Angel Devil stopped her in the alley before she could reach him.

Did Reze love Denji?

The story does not give a simple answer, but her decision to turn back toward the café shows that Denji affected her. At that point, he was no longer only a mission target to her.

Can Reze truly come back later?

She could only truly come back if the story gives her back her own awareness and lets her act by her own choice. A controlled body appearing again would not be the same as the real Reze returning.
