What Devil Is Makima?

Makima is the Control Devil in Chainsaw Man.

Makima first meets Denji in the warehouse after the Zombie Devil incident. Blood is still left on the floor and walls. Denji has just fused with Pochita, the chainsaws on his body have only just stopped, his clothes and skin are still stained with blood, and his breathing has not fully settled.

Makima walks up to him and does not immediately execute him as a devil.

She moves closer, hugs Denji, and then gives him a choice: die there as a devil, or live on as a human by following her.

Denji goes with her.

Later, Denji is brought into Public Safety and becomes a Public Safety Devil Hunter. Makima lets him eat a hot meal and also brings him into Public Safety. For the first time, Denji does not have to immediately think about debt collectors, the yakuza, or his next meal.

To Denji at that time, Makima feels like the person who pulled him away from debt, hunger, and the edge of death.

Makima is holding Denji, but what interests her is Chainsaw Man inside his heart.

Is Makima a Devil?

Makima is the Control Devil.

Devils in Chainsaw Man grow stronger through human fear. The Gun Devil, the Darkness Devil, and other devils are all connected to human fear. Makima corresponds to the human fear of control.

People fear being ordered around and controlled. They also fear having their own lives fall into someone else’s hands.

Makima enters Public Safety with the appearance of a human woman. She wears a uniform and stands in a position of authority. When she speaks, it sounds like she is giving normal official orders, so her subordinates often do not immediately question what she really wants to do.

The later story also places her in a higher position. Makima belongs to the Four Horsemen, and she is not an ordinary devil.

What Is Makima’s Power?

Makima can control beings she sees as lower than herself.

Humans, fiends, devils, and weapon beings can all fall under her control. Once controlled by her, they act according to her orders.

Makima often does not need to stand at the front herself. People under her control act for her, and she can also use the devil abilities they originally had.

Some bodies are still used by her even after death. Death does not completely remove them from Makima’s hands. Instead, they are placed back onto the battlefield.

Mice and birds also appear within her surveillance. Even when she is not at the scene, things happening far away may still fall under her eyes.

During the Kyoto operation, Makima makes people kneel before a shrine and speak the names of enemies far away. After the sacrifices collapse, those distant enemies are crushed directly.

She also made a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan.

When attacks land on Makima, the damage is transferred through the contract to Japanese citizens in the form of illness or accidents. She can be knocked down, and she can fall while bleeding. After the damage is transferred, she appears again.

Is Makima Evil?

Makima wants to reshape the world with Chainsaw Man’s power.

When she talks about war, hunger, and death, her tone sounds as if she is discussing something that has already been decided. The fears she believes should not exist can disappear from the world after being devoured by Chainsaw Man.

Aki Hayakawa later returns before Denji in the form Denji least wants to face.

Power stands at the doorway with a birthday cake, and in the next moment, Makima kills her.

Reze has already turned back to find Denji, but on the way back to the café, she meets Makima and the Angel Devil.

When Makima looks at Denji, she is always waiting for Chainsaw Man to appear.

Why and When Does Makima Kill Power?

Power later moves into Aki Hayakawa’s home and eats, argues, and goes on missions with Denji.

Aki cooks, Power causes trouble, and Denji argues with her back and forth. That apartment is not quiet, but Denji has already become used to those days.

After Aki dies, Denji remains in a lost and hollow state.

He is deeply sad and confused. Aki is not just an ordinary teammate. He is someone Denji lived with, ate with, and argued with. That death leaves Denji unsure how to face his life anymore.

Makima brings Denji to her home.

At that moment, Denji feels empty. He does not want to think about anything, and he does not want to judge what is right anymore. Makima makes him hand over his choices at that moment and tells him to obey her like a dog.

Then the doorbell rings.

Makima tells Denji to open the door.

When Denji opens the door, he sees Power standing outside.

Power is holding a birthday cake. She has come to celebrate Denji’s birthday. Before Denji can say anything, Makima is already standing behind him.

She raises her hand, points her fingers at Power like a gun, and says “Bang.”

In the next instant, Power’s body is shattered in front of Denji.

Denji is the one who opened that door with his own hand. Power has only just appeared, and Makima kills her in this way.

Why Did Makima Kill Reze?

When Reze appears, Denji is still living under Public Safety’s arrangements.

She first approaches Denji with a mission behind her. Later, her identity connected to the Bomb Devil is exposed, and the two of them truly fight each other.

The rainy night, the school, the pool, and the café briefly make Denji believe that he might be able to leave together with Reze.

Reze once tells Denji that they should run away together.

Before that, Denji has always been pushed forward by debt, the yakuza, and Public Safety. After entering Public Safety, he also lives according to the direction Makima gives him. Reze’s words make Denji seriously think for the first time that he might not have to return to Public Safety.

After Reze leaves, she could have disappeared.

In the end, she still stops, turns around, and walks toward the café.

Denji does not leave the café. He is still there waiting for Reze to come back.

On Reze’s way back, Makima and the Angel Devil appear in front of her.

Reze still tries to resist and also tries to pull the pin on her body again. Makima gives her no chance. She cannot continue toward the café, and she cannot see Denji again.

When Reze appears later, she is already standing in the group controlled by Makima.

What Does Makima Want From Chainsaw Man?

After Chainsaw Man devours a devil, the corresponding concept disappears from the world. This is exactly what Makima is looking at.

War, hunger, death, and other fears she believes should not exist can all be erased through this power.

When she talks about these things, it sounds as if she is discussing a plan that has already been prepared.

When she looks at Denji, what she is waiting for is Chainsaw Man.
