Does Power Die in Chainsaw Man?
After the Gun Devil took over Aki Hayakawa’s body, Denji ultimately had to end Aki’s life with his own hands.
Denji Gives Up His Own Will
After that battle, Denji went to Makima’s apartment and sought someone to depend on. He could not accept that Aki was dead, much less face the fact that he had delivered the final blow himself. He looked completely lost, and his eyes appeared vacant. He answered every question mechanically, as though someone had pulled his soul from his body and left only an empty shell behind.
Makima did not give him time to process his emotions. Instead, she took advantage of his breakdown and tightened her control over him.
She made Denji behave like a dog and ordered him to offer his paw and roll over. Denji followed every instruction without resisting. After completing the actions, he waited for Makima to stroke his head. As long as she gave him even a small amount of affection, he felt that he could stop thinking for a while and avoid remembering the moment Aki died in front of him.
When Makima asked how he wanted to live from then on, Denji gave up making decisions for himself. He agreed to become Makima’s “dog” and hand over his life, judgement and choices to her.
He even obeyed her by barking:
“Woof.”
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Power Arrives at the Apartment With a Birthday Cake
Power, who was waiting outside, did not know that Aki was dead.
She was still caught up in the excitement of celebrating Denji’s birthday. Holding a birthday cake in both hands, she waited for Denji to open the door. She did not know that Denji had just killed Aki himself, or that the home where the three of them once ate, argued and lived together could never return to the way it had been.
For Power, this meeting should have become a birthday celebration.
Makima Orders Denji to Open the Door
Makima calmly told Denji that she had called Power over. She then said that once the door opened, she would kill Power right there.
Denji froze.
He anxiously asked Makima why she would do that, but Makima stopped him immediately:
“Do not think.”
Having just surrendered himself to Makima as her dog, Denji instinctively answered with another “woof.” However, the person standing outside was Power. He could not accept her approaching death as easily as he had accepted Makima’s other commands.
Denji suspected that Makima was only joking.
Makima offered no explanation. She simply ordered him to open the door.
As Denji prepared to obey, Pochita’s vague warning suddenly surfaced in his mind:
“Do not open the door.”
Makima’s command pushed him forward from behind, while Pochita’s voice seemed to reach out from deep within his memories and stop him from approaching the door. The two voices pulled against each other inside his head, leaving Denji standing there in hesitation.
He could not believe that Makima would truly kill Power, so he desperately searched for another explanation. Denji suddenly remembered that his birthday was tomorrow. Perhaps Power stood outside with a cake, ready to celebrate with him a day early. Perhaps everything Makima had just said was only another way of teasing him.
Denji held on to that thought and finally opened the door.
Makima Takes Power’s Life
Power stood in the corridor holding an intact birthday cake. When she saw Denji, her face still carried the happiness of coming to celebrate his birthday.
She had not yet handed him the cake. She did not even have the chance to ask why he looked so exhausted.
Behind Denji, Makima had already raised her right hand and pointed her finger at Power.
“Bang.”
The moment the word left her mouth, a tremendous force tore straight through Power’s torso. The impact ripped apart the body below her chest and made the cake in her hands explode.
Power did not have time to scream.
Makima’s attack shattered her torso in an instant and directly took her life.
One second earlier, she had stood outside with a cake, waiting to see Denji’s reaction to his birthday present. The next second, her remains lay in the corridor.
Power died without ever knowing that Aki had already left them.
Denji remained frozen in the doorway, staring blankly at the place where Power had fallen. His mind could not process what had happened. His body began to tremble, but he could not form a complete sentence.
Makima stood behind him without changing her expression.
She had made Denji open the door himself because she wanted Power to die in front of him. Aki had only just died, and within seconds, Makima had also taken Power away. The family Denji had briefly gained disappeared one after another, and the foundation of his contract with Pochita—to allow Denji to live a happy life—began to come apart.
The Power who had stood outside the apartment was dead, but some of the blood she had previously left inside Denji still remained.
Power Reappears From Inside Denji
Power had once allowed Denji to drink her blood, and some of it had remained inside his body.
Pochita Calls Power Back
After Denji’s consciousness completely collapsed and Pochita appeared in his Chainsaw Man form, he used the remaining blood to call out to Power.
When she heard his voice, Power first told Pochita that she had already died. She remembered Makima raising her finger and the moment the attack destroyed her body at the doorway. She could no longer restore her original Blood Fiend body.
Pochita told her that the blood remaining inside Denji could still allow her to move for a short time. To give her enough strength to appear again, he asked Power to eat part of his flesh and go outside to save Denji.
Power accepted.
While Makima and the Public Safety members surrounded Chainsaw Man, a large amount of blood suddenly poured from his body. Power burst out of it. She no longer looked like the Blood Fiend Denji knew and instead appeared in a form closer to the Blood Devil’s true body.
Power Attacks Makima
As soon as she appeared, Power began controlling the surrounding blood and turning it into weapons. Blood spears burst from the bodies of Makima and the Public Safety members, while more blood blades fell from above and threw the entire scene into chaos.
The moment she gained the advantage, her familiar arrogance returned. Power loudly declared that she was the strongest devil and continued attacking Makima, as though the attack at the apartment door had never happened.
Makima quickly fought back.
One devastating injury after another tore through Power’s body, and the strength she had just regained began disappearing rapidly. Even so, she rushed to the fallen Chainsaw Man, lifted him into her arms and refused to let Makima approach him.
Makima did not kill Power immediately.
She ordered Power to hand over Chainsaw Man and promised that, as long as she obeyed, she could become Makima’s pet again.
Power Disobeys Makima for the First Time
Power had always been deeply afraid of Makima.
Fear Almost Makes Power Surrender
That fear had already become instinctive. When she heard that she could “become Makima’s pet again,” her attitude changed almost immediately. Only moments earlier, she had attacked Makima violently. Now she carried Chainsaw Man towards her and loudly claimed the credit for capturing him.
She wanted Makima to believe that she was still willing to obey.
Makima stood in front of her and held out her hand, waiting for Power to surrender Chainsaw Man.
Although Power had already reached her, she kept both arms tightly wrapped around him.
She looked down at Denji in her arms.
Power Remembers Her Life With Denji
The first memory that returned to her was their first meeting. Power had deceived Denji to rescue Meowy and led him directly to the Bat Devil. Even after she used him, Denji still rushed into danger and saved both Power and Meowy.
She then remembered the days after the encounter with the Darkness Devil.
Fear had tormented Power so badly that she could not enter the bathroom by herself or sleep alone at night. Denji complained constantly, but he stayed beside her, helped her eat, watched over her while she slept and waited for her to recover.
She did not remember a hero or a grand battle.
Instead, Power remembered the person she had once deceived, yet who had never truly abandoned her.
Makima ordered her to surrender Chainsaw Man again.
Power tightened her arms around Denji.
Power Escapes With Denji
Blood weapons suddenly burst from Makima’s body. Using the confusion created by the attack, Power turned and ran, carrying Denji out of the surrounding crowd.
As she fled, even Power could not understand why she was defying Makima for Denji.
She knew how terrifying Makima was. Power also knew that her injuries were too severe for her to escape very far. Yet even as her pursuers closed in, she never released Denji from her arms.
The devil hunters blocking her path attacked and cut open her body again. Zombies rushed in from every direction, surrounding her and Denji.
Despite her severe injuries, Power continued fighting.
By the time the last group of zombies had fallen, she could no longer stand properly. Holding Denji close, she crawled forward until she found a rubbish bin. She dragged him inside and hid there with him.
In the past, Power had been willing to change sides at any moment to keep herself alive.
This time, Makima gave her the chance to surrender Denji, but she chose to carry him away.
The Contract Inside the Rubbish Bin
When Denji regained consciousness, he saw the Power he recognised.
Denji Refuses to Return Outside
Power called his name, embraced him and proudly announced that she had successfully rescued him. She waited for Denji to respond as he normally would, but he no longer wanted to leave the rubbish bin.
Denji told Power that he had already received everything he once wanted.
He had eaten until he was full, had somewhere to sleep and had lived in the same home as Aki and Power. That life had once made him believe that he could finally live like an ordinary person.
Now Aki was dead, and Power could no longer remain beside him.
Even if he returned outside, Denji did not believe that anything good would happen again. He would rather remain where he was than face losing someone else.
After listening to him, Power immediately called him an idiot.
She asked whether losing her had made him so miserable that he could no longer do anything. Denji did not deny it.
Power Asks Denji to Find Her Again
Power then told him that the Blood Devil would reincarnate after death. However, the next Blood Devil would not retain her current memories or remember ever carrying the name Power.
The next time they met, this new Blood Devil might not recognise Denji and could even treat him as an enemy.
Even so, Power demanded that Denji find her.
When the Blood Devil returned to the human world, Denji had to find the devil who no longer knew him, approach her and become her friend again.
Power wanted Denji to start from their first meeting and turn that unfamiliar Blood Devil back into the Power he knew.
Power Gives Denji Her Remaining Blood
She then offered him a contract.
Power would give Denji all of her remaining blood. In exchange, Denji had to promise that he would find the reincarnated Blood Devil in the future.
Denji accepted.
After giving her blood to Denji, Power brought her brief return to an end.
When Denji opened his eyes again, he found himself alone inside the rubbish bin. He immediately sat up and shouted Power’s name, but no answer came.
When Power arrived at the apartment with the birthday cake, she only wanted to celebrate Denji’s birthday.
After awakening inside Denji, the last thing she did was rescue him from Makima, then leave him her blood and the promise that they would meet again.
