Does Makima Die?
At the end of Part 1 of Chainsaw Man, Denji sits at the dining table and puts a meal made from Makima’s body into his mouth.
Makima does die, but she does not die immediately when Denji’s chainsaw cuts into her body.
Before this moment, she has already survived several injuries that would have killed an ordinary person. Bullets have torn through her body, and she has fallen during battles, yet she has continued moving afterwards. Ordinary attacks can make Makima bleed and temporarily damage her body, but they cannot make death remain with her.
Makima has a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan. When someone attacks her, the resulting damage is converted into illnesses or accidents that affect ordinary Japanese citizens.
The attacker clearly hits Makima, but the final consequence may fall upon someone who knows nothing about the battle. Once the damage is transferred, Makima can continue moving.
Denji has already watched her fall and then stand up again. During their final battle, he does not continue confronting Makima directly.
Makima Keeps Watching Chainsaw Man
The Chainsaw Man who remains on the battlefield and fights Makima is actually Pochita.
Before the battle, Denji removes his heart, which is Pochita, from his body. Pochita returns to the form of Chainsaw Man and appears in front of Makima in Denji’s place.
Makima remembers the scent of Chainsaw Man.
She has spent a long time pursuing the Chainsaw Man who can consume devils and make certain concepts disappear from the world. However, Makima has never truly remembered the scent of Denji, even though he has remained beside her for so long.
While Pochita stands on the battlefield, Denji hides among the bodies piled nearby.
The blood Power left inside Denji keeps his body alive and also conceals his original scent. Makima does not realise that the person hiding nearby is Denji because her attention remains fixed on Pochita.
After the battle, Makima believes she has defeated Chainsaw Man.
She holds Pochita’s heart while her thoughts remain focused on the target she has pursued for so long. Denji emerges from among the bodies while her guard is lowered and cuts her with a chainsaw made from Power’s blood.
The Blood Power Leaves Behind for Denji
After Makima kills Power, Power briefly returns in the form of the Blood Devil.
She finds Denji inside a rubbish bin after he has lost the will to continue and gives him her blood. Power also makes Denji promise that he will find the reincarnated Blood Devil one day and become friends with her again.
That blood remains inside Denji’s body.
When he faces Makima, Denji uses Power’s blood to create a chainsaw. Makima does not notice him approaching, and Denji cuts into her body.
Power’s blood enters Makima through the wound and continues moving inside her body.
Makima normally recovers quickly after receiving injuries. This time, Power’s blood continues damaging the tissue inside her body and prevents her from standing up as quickly as before.
Denji’s attack does not immediately cancel Makima’s contract with the Prime Minister of Japan. The strike only delays her recovery and gives Denji enough time to remove her body from the battlefield.
While Makima is unable to move, Denji takes her body home.
Denji Turns Makima Into Meal After Meal
Boxes containing pieces of flesh appear in the kitchen, while different prepared meals gradually appear on the dining table.
Denji divides Makima’s body into many portions and eats one portion each day. He does not complete the process in a single meal. Instead, he spends a period of time eating every dish made from Makima, one meal after another.
Kishibe later admits that he does not understand why Makima’s contract with the Prime Minister of Japan failed to bring her back again.
Denji tells Kishibe that he was not thinking about attacking Makima while eating her.
He wanted to accept all of Makima into his own body, and he describes what he did as an act of love. For Denji, eating Makima was not another attempt to hurt her with a weapon, nor was it an ordinary execution after a battle.
Makima’s contract transfers attacks directed at her. Denji’s actions do not take the form of an ordinary attack, and Makima does not recover through the contract again.
Denji’s feelings towards Makima do not consist only of hatred.
Makima finds Denji in the warehouse shortly after he merges with Pochita. She brings him into Public Safety, gives him a hot meal and provides him with a place to live. At that time, Denji has spent years carrying debt. He cannot even afford to put much jam on his toast and never knows where his next meal will come from.
After joining Public Safety, Denji gradually begins living with Aki Hayakawa and Power.
They eat in the same room and argue about ordinary daily problems. Denji has never experienced this kind of life before.
Later, Aki becomes the Gun Fiend and dies by Denji’s hand. Power arrives at Makima’s door carrying a birthday cake. When Denji opens the door himself, Makima raises her hand and says, “Bang.” Power’s body is destroyed in front of Denji.
Makima personally destroys the life Denji has only recently gained.
In the end, only Denji and the many divided portions of Makima remain in the kitchen. He continues eating those meals until no part of Makima’s body remains.
The Makima who once appeared before him in a Public Safety uniform never returns.
Kishibe Brings Nayuta
After Makima dies, the Control Devil does not disappear from the world with her.
In Chainsaw Man, devils reincarnate between Hell and the human world after they die. The fear of control still exists, so the Control Devil returns to the human world.
Kishibe later brings back a young girl he found in China and takes her to Denji.
Her name is Nayuta, and her eyes have ring-shaped patterns similar to Makima’s. When Denji reaches towards her, Nayuta immediately bites his finger. The movement and the feeling of her bite allow Denji to recognise her connection to the Control Devil.
Nayuta is the new reincarnation of the Control Devil.
She does not have Makima’s position in Public Safety or Makima’s memories of Denji. She is not Makima after recovering in the body of a young girl, and she is not the original Makima wearing a different appearance.
Kishibe does not hand Nayuta over to the government.
The government raised Makima, and she eventually became a Control Devil who habitually controlled other people. Kishibe does not want Nayuta to grow up in the same environment and follow Makima’s path, so he asks Denji to care for her.
Denji takes Nayuta back to the room where he lives with the dogs. She does not continue using Makima’s name. Instead, she begins living with Denji under her own name.
